The ASWB (ASWB stands for Association of Social Work Boards) Clinical Exam reflects systemic racism in the mental health field, particularly in California, where individuals can practice as mental health counselors without a license their entire lives. This exam, which determines licensure, reveals significant disparities: 84% of white first-time test-takers pass, compared to only 45% of Black test-takers. Furthermore, Black individuals’ passing rates decrease with repeated attempts, highlighting structural inequities in the system.

This test was created during a time when certain exclusionary mindsets prevailed, and as I took the exam and missing the passing score by just one point I realized it functions which resembles a literacy test. It requires a way of thinking that validates the importance of having more Black mental health professionals who can provide therapy to individuals sharing similar struggles. The statistics demonstrate that we think differently, underscoring the need for diverse representation in mental health services.

My personal experience reflects these systemic inequities. At Liberty University, a Caucasian professor unfairly gave me a zero on an assignment I submitted, even though I followed the rubric precisely. In their feedback, the professor contradicted the rubric’s instructions, the professor also targeted me individually, asking me to delete my post and to resubmit (following instructions that made it impossible for me to resubmit) the assignment after I already submitted my assignment four days early due to Easter. After Liberty closed the investigation, the passive aggressive teacher invades my privacy and continues to harass me by researching me and sending me pictures of one of his former “black” students leaving the the comment “you may find this interesting.”

Liberty University conducted an investigation but presented a completely different version of events. After I contacted the United States Department of Education, Civil Rights , led by Jasmine a Caucasian investigator/attorney who dismissed my concerns despite clear evidence of targeting and violations of my rights.

Jasmine’s investigation lacked logical or critical thinking, undermining the importance of the rubric as the standard in the classroom. The Department of Education reopened my case, only to reassign it to Jasmine, who later claimed she couldn’t investigate her own actions. This blatant mishandling highlights institutional bias and the urgent need for accountability.

The ASWB Clinical Exam and experiences like mine demonstrate the pervasive barriers Black individuals face in mental health licensing and education.

ASWB stands for Association of Social Work Boards, which is an organization that:
Creates and administers social work exams
Promotes equity and justice,
denounces racism, intolerance, exclusion, and other forms of discrimination.
