The Bittersweet Side of Expat Life

Living abroad as an empty nester has been an incredible journey—new experiences, personal growth, and a life I truly love. But there’s another side to this expat life that isn’t always talked about. My son also lives abroad, in a different country, and while I’m beyond grateful for the time we just spent together in Peru, the hardest part is leaving—not knowing when I’ll see him again.

Goodbyes don’t get easier. No matter how many years pass, there’s always that moment when I wish I could just hop on a plane and see him whenever I want. But life doesn’t always work that way. We video call, we text, we share our lives from a distance—but nothing replaces a hug from your child.

This is the ebb and flow of expat life. It’s not always sunshine and adventure. There are moments of loneliness, of missing family, of wishing things were just a little different. And that’s okay.

For those of you living abroad or considering this path, know that the emotional side is real. But also know that love knows no borders. We make it work, we cherish the time we get, and we keep living fully—wherever we are in the world. ❤️

Marjorie Lee Browne – The Mathematician Who Walked for Clarity and Wellness

Marjorie Lee Browne (1914–1979) was a trailblazing mathematician, one of the first Black women to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. But what many don’t know is that she used walking as a way to clear her mind, reduce stress, and stay sharp.

She believed that movement stimulated thinking, and she often took long walks to help solve complex math problems. Walking wasn’t just physical exercise for her—it was a mental and emotional wellness tool.

Walking is one of my favorite activities, it’s helps me see things clearly and is a great way to mentally work out solutions to problems or situations.

Try a 10-minute walk today and see how it clears your mind! #BlackHistoryMonth2025 #blackwomenshealth #walkingforhealth

Letting Go, Moving On, and Choosing YOU💜

There comes a time when we have to release what no longer serves us—old habits, relationships, situations, even versions of ourselves. Holding on can feel safe, but real peace comes when we trust the process and move forward.

Letting go isn’t about forgetting; it’s about freeing yourself. It’s about choosing self-care over stress, alignment over attachment, and inner peace over external validation.

So today, ask yourself: What am I holding onto that’s holding me back? And more importantly, am I ready to step into the life I truly deserve?

Prioritize YOU. Protect your peace. Move forward with grace.

What’s one way you practice self-care while letting go? Let’s talk in the comments. ⬇️💜

If you find yourself hungry while strolling through Porto, make sure you stop at CA Downtown. I had a delicious grilled cheese with melt in your mouth roasted beef, a fresh avocado salad and a carrot, apple ginger drink. The sandwich was bursting with flavor and once you put some of the spicy mayo on a bite, it took it to an entire different level, everything was so yummy! 😋 #BrunchIdeas #portugalfood #blackexpat #FoodieFinds

Celebrating Black Women Travelers in History: The Story of Ida B. Wells

This Black History Month, we’re honoring Ida B. Wells—not just a fearless journalist and civil rights activist but also a bold traveler who navigated the world to fight for justice.

Born into slavery in 1862, Ida refused to be confined by the limitations society placed on Black women. She traveled extensively across the U.S. and Europe, delivering powerful speeches on racial injustice and women’s rights. Imagine the courage it took to board trains, cross oceans, and stand on stages where her very presence was an act of defiance.

Ida’s journeys weren’t about leisure; they were about purpose. She used her passport as a tool of activism, proving that travel can be a radical act—an opportunity to raise your voice, broaden your horizons, and connect with the global fight for justice.

Her story reminds us: Every time a Black woman steps out into the world, she carries history with her and creates new paths for others to follow.
