One of the largest tuberculosis outbreaks ever recorded in the U.S. has hit Kansas City. As of January 24, 67 active cases of TB were reported in Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas. 

The news comes amid the fiery Senate confirmation hearing for prominent anti-vaccine campaigner Robert F Kennedy Jr, U.S. President Donal Trump’s pick for health secretary.

Four IDF soldiers—Karina Ariev, Daniela Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag—were released by Hamas after 477 days in captivity. 

The women, part of an unarmed observer unit stationed near Gaza, were abducted on October 7, 2023, during Hamas’s deadly assault on the Nahal Oz base. 

As part of the agreed hostage and prisoner exchange deal, Israel released 200 prisoners on Saturday. According to reports, 114 prisoners were transferred to the Palestinian city of Ramallah, 16 were taken to Gaza, and 70 were deported to Egypt, as Israel says those convicted of killing Israelis will not be allowed to return to their homes.

According to a list released by Hamas, 120 out of the 200 freed prisoners were serving life sentences for involvement in attacks that killed dozens of people.

Outside Gaza European Hospital, where 16 freed detainees arrived for medical checks, thousands gathered to welcome them, chanting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") and "Greeting to Qassam Brigades" (Hamas' armed wing).

Hundreds of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, embracing and cheering as they watched the emotional handover live.

Israel and Hamas agree to Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal

The Israeli government and Hamas have reached an agreement to pause the fighting in Gaza, according to a confirmation from a Qatari Prime Minister. 

The deal involves a phased exchange: Hamas and its allied militant groups will release 33 hostages captured during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Zelenskyy calls out Slovak PM Fico for backing Russia over Europe. 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sharply criticized Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico following offensive comments and Fico’s rejection of Kyiv’s offer to help Slovakia adapt to the loss of Russian gas supplies.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy highlighted Fico’s reliance on "shadow schemes" with Russia, calling it a strategic error that left Slovakia vulnerable. China is turning the Kubuqi Desert from a desolate landscape to a sea solar panel possibility transformed by a surge of newly installed solar panels. 

The construction is part of China’s multi-year plan to build a ‘solar great wall’ designed to generate enough energy to power Beijing.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said on Monday that Russia was "guilty" for the crash of an AZAL passenger jet last month, which Baku claims was struck by Russian air defenses.

"The guilt for the death of Azerbaijani citizens lies with representatives of the Russian Federation," Aliyev said during a meeting with surviving crew members and the families of those killed.

He added that air defense measures for Grozny, the capital of Russia’s Chechnya region, were only announced after the plane had been "shot from the ground." Aliyev also questioned why the plane was diverted to Aktau, Kazakhstan, for an emergency landing, as there was no explanation provided.

Moscow has confirmed its air defenses were active in the area at the time, claiming it was under attack from Ukrainian drones.

Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized for the "incident" occurring in Russian airspace but has not addressed claims that the plane was struck by Russian weaponry.

An Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 jet crashed in Kazakhstan on December 25, killing 38 of the 67 people on board after being redirected from its scheduled landing in Grozny.
