NU completes tourney sweep, clinches 7-peat title
By John Miles Arcenal

National University Men's Badminton Team nabbed its seventh straight championship, extending their unblemished record to 56 wins in a row after a 3-0 showdown over their rivals Ateneo Blue Eagles in the Championship match of UAAP Men's Badminton Tournament, Sunday, at Centro Athletico Badminton Center in Cubao, Quezon City.

Rising star Lanz Zafra and team captain Solomon Padiz Jr were hailed as the tournament's co-Most Valuable Players helping the National U seal its first title of the season.

As the match kicked off, Zafra drew the first blood for the Bulldogs after a straight-set beatdown 21-13, 21-13 against the Eagles' Lyrden Laborte in the first singles match.

Zafra unleashed a couple of powerful smashes in the opening set to establish a comfortable lead. The rookie pushed Laborte to commit an attack error in the latter part of the game to hand the Jhocson shuttlers the first victory.

Meanwhile, fellow newcomer Mark Anthony Velasco settled for a three-setter outing against Ateneo's team skipper Arthur Salvado with a statement of 21- 18, 10-21, 21-14.

Velasco displayed a brilliant offensive style to snuck past Salvado's racket, yet, the captain snatched the momentum back to his hands coming in the second frame.

After a challenging set two loss, Velasco regained his rhythm in the penultimate juncture as he threw heavy cross-court attacks, forcing his opponent to surrender a missed hit.

For the doubles division, a dynamic duo from the national team paired up as Padiz Jr. and Julius Villabrille showcased perfect chemistry to ultimately rule the match with a 21-13, 21-10 outcome over Bryan Bernardo and Charles Bagasbas.

NU head coach Jaime Llanes was delighted with how his boys performed during the competition and especially how they strengthened their camaraderie.

"Basta hindi ko naman sila pine-pressure. I don't like pressuring my players. I don't care if they win or they lose, ang akin is that they perform at their highest level," the mentor added.
On the other hand, the NU Lady Shuttlers settled for a bronze medal after surpassing the DLSU Lady Archers.

NU Redeems Cheerdance Throne, Marks Seventh Gold
By: Trixiah Ann Maurez Grafil-Gumba

The NU Pep Squad dominated the cheerdance stage after taking home the championship crown with 723 points in the UAAP Season 85 Cheerdance Competition, yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Synergized with their “Zumbark” concept, NU fused cheer and aerobics to bounce back from a second runner-up finish last Season 84 after their three-peat record was tainted by FEU.

“Naging smart kami ngayon in a way na hindi kami pwede mabutasan dahil lang sa kulang kami sa dance. We have to balance both in cheerleading and cheerdance category,” said NU head coach Ghicka Bernabe, as the Jhocson-based crew led the numbers in stunts, pyramids, and dance departments.

“This is a sweet victory to all of us,” added team captain Daniela Jane Silos, remarking that it was a worth-it win after their hardships and sacrifices.

National University bagged a championship prize of ₱50,000 with three-of-four special awards, namely the Skechers Stylish Performance Team Award, Biogenic Alcohol Best Pyramid Award, and a back-to-back title of the Silka Best Awra Dance Move.

Meanwhile, season 85 will be the last appearance of Ghicka Bernabe as the head coach of the Gold and Blue.
A total of 18,029 gate attendance filled the arena to witness the eight competing universities, with Far Eastern University finishing second on the podium and the University of Sto. Tomas secured the third.
