Portrait photography is one of the oldest photographic disciplines. Generally speaking, a portrait involves an agreement between the photographer and the subject, often known as the sitter (even when standing) to create an image which represents the sitter as themselves. A portrait can be formal, casual, environmental or candid. Except in a candid portrait, the photographer will often advise the sitter how to pose, although the psychological aspects of posing may make it more successful to advise the sitter what to think about. The right camera angle can make a big difference between an inferior portrait photograph and an excellent portrait photograph.
