Song of the Week: CIX – Thunder
 https://youtu.be/d1ndYsGGWes

---

I have yet to encounter a bad K-pop song with an MV shot in Hong Kong. Of course, any comeback that features my beloved home city will get a subtle boost in sentimental value, but something about its vibrant streets and sprawling skyscrapers just seems to inspire quality music!

That brings us to CIX, who have returned after exactly one year, now performing as a quartet. The title track ‘Thunder’ takes a cue from fellow under-the-radar boy groups like VANNER and TAN to deliver a magnificent funk-pop jam. Last January’s ‘Lovers or Enemies’ established a keen retro groove, and this follow-up triumphantly completes the sonic reinvention by focusing its energy towards the dancefloor.

‘Thunder’ is robust in construction, opening with an addictive hook that leads into a propulsive rhythm of bass and orchestral hits. The sleek melody will likely fare well in the long run, and I am also obliged to acknowledge the second rap verse which goes with the flow instead of against it. A bit of rhythm guitar tries to poke through during the chorus, and it would’ve been shrewd to let it rip during the bridge. The electrifying dance break is a perfect storm, although a final chorus would’ve taken it over the top.

Overall, this is an incredible single and CIX’s best yet.

Song of the Week: IVE – Rebel Heart
 https://youtu.be/g36q0ZLvygQ

---

We are so back! ‘Rebel Heart’ signals a roaring return to form for IVE, recapturing the spirit of their greatest hits through this bold statement of intent.

The verses resemble those of Her Majesty ‘I Am’, aided by a blend of stomping percussion and robust guitar. Though the defiant attitudes espoused in the chorus may be somewhat contrived, the hook is delivered with flair, and with a great deal of firepower behind it. A childish-sounding bridge threatens to derail the song, but luckily, a stellar, vocal-led segment from Wonyoung and Liz quickly puts the record back on track for an epic finale.

‘Rebel Heart’ does have a repetitive melody, which is emblematic of the mechanical nature of IVE’s songwriting in general. However, this is very much a feature and not a bug, helping to ensure memorability on first listen. My bias for IVE will warrant a high rating to start, but the song’s anthemic quality also bodes well for its longevity, and I’m confident the score will only go up from here. Hopefully ‘Rebel Heart’ will set the stage for a blazing 2025 comeback that rivals their past glories.

Song of the Week: 2Z – Great Force
 https://youtu.be/ZlQGxT4OYx0

---

Another year, another nugu promotion! 2Z’s powerful and melodic rock style is right up my alley.

Their latest single opens with a stirring guitar-fuelled intro before cutting to a piano-led verse—an example of a quieter moment that the song uses to build ambience and juxtapose the more fervent parts. True to its name, ‘Great Force’ features a chorus that ploughs through everything in its path with extreme prejudice, forging an emphatic centrepiece to highlight possibly the first great song of 2025.

Do check it out.

Song of the Week: fromis_9 – From
 https://youtu.be/eeZzCoghZzw

---

This might have been fromis_9’s last release (let’s hope it’s not!), but I’m glad their final single for the foreseeable future is not an overly downcast affair. ‘From’ is in keeping with the sleek and sophisticated brand of music they’ve spent the past few years building, with an added emotional edge for this moment of uncertainty in their career. The melodies are nondescript but pretty, and made better by the girls’ wholehearted performances.

Regardless of whether fromis_9 will continue as a group, the atmospheric and soulful synthpop sound on this record certainly does justice to their impressive discography, while providing a hopeful undertone for new beginnings.
